Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games label. Set in the 1800s, it takes place long before the events of the Harry Potter books and films. Players take control of a Hogwarts student who possesses an unusual ability connected to ancient magic and becomes involved in a wider threat to the wizarding world.
The game allows players to create and customize their own witch or wizard and explore Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and other surrounding locations. Gameplay combines exploration with spell-based combat, quests, puzzles and character progression. Players can learn spells, brew potions, grow magical plants, care for magical creatures and develop their abilities through the game's talent system.
Hogwarts Legacy is primarily a single-player experience and does not include online or cooperative gameplay. Its story is separate from the original Harry Potter narrative, allowing players to experience an earlier period of the Wizarding World with an original protagonist and storyline.
The game originally launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC on February 10, 2023. Versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One followed on May 5, 2023, while the Nintendo Switch version launched on November 14, 2023. A Nintendo Switch 2 edition followed on June 5, 2025.
