Minecraft is a sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios. Players explore procedurally generated worlds made from blocks, gather resources, craft tools and items, construct buildings, and interact with a wide range of creatures and environments. The game can be played alone or with other players.
Creative mode provides unlimited resources, flight, and the ability to build freely, while Survival mode requires players to gather materials, manage health and hunger, craft equipment, explore, and defend themselves against hostile creatures. Java Edition also includes Hardcore mode, in which players have only one life.
Minecraft has expanded from its original PC release into a multi-platform game. Current Bedrock Edition supports cross-play between compatible Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile versions, while Java Edition supports cross-play between Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The game originally entered public development in 2009 and received its full release on 2011-11-18. Since then, Mojang has continued to release major updates and game drops that add new gameplay systems, blocks, creatures, environments, and technical improvements.
